"I suspect that the data does indicate inequality in the compensation of men and women in the product management role."

While there appears to be a difference in the average compensation, it's worth noting the substantial overlap in the distributions of men and women in every chart presented in this article.

Hey Will, you'll have to ask the Pragmatic Marketing folks for that. They ran the survey, and would be the ones to decide what makes the most sense.

Would it be possible to share the data upon which this analysis is based?

The Cranky Product Manager speaks from some personal experience. She'd suspect that the gender disparity at 10-15 yrs might be due to having kids. Even if the female PM works just as hard and travels just as much before and after kids, the CPM believes there is a general perception that the mom-PM is "not as committed" and not as hard working as non-mom-PMs. In contrast, dad-PMs don't seem to be affected, at least in the CPM's observation.

The above is based on the CPM's perceptions and in-depth knowledge of the salaries of a fairly large PM team that she inherited/manages. However, there is plenty of quantitative research out there that shows that parenthood penalizes women and benefits men even if all other variables (performance reviews, hours put in, etc...) are kept the same.

Another reason for the Cranky PM to be frakin' cranky.
