The best person I know at interaction design grew into the role from a usability background. She started with a framework for understanding how people interact with computers. She built onto that the higher-level concept of how people approach and synthesize problems.

I've worked effectively on projects where the people wearing the usability and requirements "titles" collaborated (much as Cooper describes), but with the incorporation of value-driven prioritization.

I also have not seen a project or company with formally staffed interaction designers. I suspect it is Cooper's "new thing", and look forward to reading his book when it arrives.

Hey Scott,

Who do you think should play the role of "interaction designer" as defined by Cooper? In most companies in Silicon Valley, I don't believe such a job title exists.

There are usually Product Managers, UI Designers and Visual Designers (may be slightly different nomencature depending on the company). But not many "Interaction Designers"!
